Yoga teaches us to cure what need not be endured and endure what cannot be cured.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What is yoga?
The word yoga means to yoke or unite. At its core yoga seeks to unite the physical, mental and spiritual body. Practicing yoga postures is the beginning.

Who can practice yoga?
Anyone regardless of flexibility, age or strength can enjoy the benefits of yoga. It can be done by the young or the elderly, athletes or to those new to physical activity. If you are pregnant or have a serious illness or other challenges please do consult with the instructor first before signing up for a class.

What should I wear?
Students should wear clothing that is comfortable and does not bind. Shorts or leggings and a T-shirt are fine. Poses are done with bare feet. Ideally, your knees should be visible, but the instructor wants you to be comfortable, so wear what is best for you.

What should I bring?
Most importantly bring a receptive mind. The yoga studio has everything you need to practice. If you prefer to bring your own mat or eyebag, feel free to do so. The studio store also has good quality yoga props for sale at competitive prices.

Is yoga a religion?
Yoga is not a religion. It is a system of heightening self awareness and spiritual connection and may be practiced by people of any religion or even those with no spiritual beliefs.

How is yoga different from exercise?
Yoga poses are practiced with awareness of the body, mind and breath to bring about unification of the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual self. Yoga practices develop the entire self, not just the body.

Is it true that yoga should be practiced on an empty stomach?
This is true. Never eat a heavy meal before your yoga practice. In yoga we twist from side to side, turn upside down, and bend forward and backward. If you have not fully digested your last meal you may find yourself feeling very uncomfortable. If you must eat something experiment with a cup of tea and toast or a light snack such as yogurt or a handful of nuts.

What is the OM?
Classes begin with the chanting of the OM. The OM is said to be the sound that resonates in every atom in the universe, Chanting OM before class helps to focus the mind to practice yoga with awareness and brings a sense of connection with all things.

What does "Namaste" mean?
Classes sometimes end by the teacher and students saying Namaste. This sanskrit word means " the sacred in me honors the sacred in you and when we are in that place, we are one".

How often should I take a class?
A minimum of once a week is recommended. Consistency in your practice is
rewarding.

Should I practice at home?
To benefit most from yoga a home practice is recommended, but it should not be a burden. You can start on your own with a 10 minute practice of 2 or 3 poses a couple of times a week. Focus on the quality of your practice rather than on time spent.

May I join a class at any time?
For those who are taking a yoga class for the very first time, it is recommended that you attend a six class Beginners Class on Tuesday evenings. You can then switch to one of the other ongoing classes with more confidence.
